Luring the listener in with the smooth sounds of a sitar and Indian inspired vocalisations, Ishani’s latest track details the inner monologue of an individual slowly drifting away from themselves. In other words, Ishani puts a spin on the colloquial term “ghosting”, using it here in reference to herself as she becomes aware of the growing disconnection between her head and her heart.
During lockdown, many of us have spent more time with ourselves and our own thoughts than ever before. With endless days that merge into one and the feeling of being stuck inside a loop, there is a quiet frustration that is building up inside all of us. Ishani captures this mood with repetitions of “something’s gotta give”, pleading for some kind of disruption to the grey monotony of what life has become. Ishani’s vocals, in tandem with a heavy drummed bassline and eerie piano, mirror the depth of the subject matter.
As social creatures, we build our self identity through the interactions we have with other people. With the new physical distancing measures in place, this dynamic has changed and many of us are communicating through our devices and losing touch with our human soul.
On the other side of this reality is hope and a new future filled with colour and laughter. The possibility of change is reflected in the hard-hitting refrain, where Ishani sings: “I hear colours when I’m with you”.
